Incident Leads to Lockdown at Country Oaks Elementary School.
Two 10-year-old students were arrested in connection with a gun sold at their elementary school in Florida, according to county officials.
The incident occurred back in February when a deputy’s son agreed to exchange a handgun, later found to belong to his deceased father, for $300. The gun was sold to another student at Country Oaks Elementary School.
The school was placed under lockdown on Wednesday morning following a call to the sheriff’s office about a suspicious incident on campus. During the investigation, authorities found ammunition in the backpack of the boy who purchased the gun. The gun was later discovered in his backyard, hidden under a shed along with a 74-gram bag of marijuana.
The boy who purchased the gun was charged with several offenses, including the purchase of a firearm by a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.
The deputy’s son who sold the gun was charged with selling a firearm to a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property, and grand theft of a firearm.
Additionally, the mother of the boy who sold the gun, also a Hendry County deputy, was placed on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry.
Both students have been in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice since their arrest.
