Exposing Trafficking: The Arrests That Could Change Lives

A Circuit Court in Accra has remanded two Nigerians into police custody for their alleged involvement in a human trafficking ring that lured young girls from Nigeria to Ghana under false pretences. These young girls were promised jobs, but instead, they found themselves trapped in a cycle of abuse and exploitation.

Court documents reveal that Chidemma Nweke, known as Mama, a 24-year-old sex worker, and Mery Francis, also known as Gina or Blessing, a 27-year-old trader, kept the victims at a brothel in Wassa Akropong, located in Ghana’s Western North Region. The victims were coerced into prostitution, with the accused collecting the earnings.

Seven girls have been successfully rescued from this dire situation, thanks to the diligent efforts of a Good Samaritan and Ghana’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit. Mery Francis faces multiple human trafficking charges, while Chidemma Nweke is charged with a single count of human trafficking. Both have pleaded not guilty.

The investigation continues as authorities pursue two additional suspects, Favour and Blessing, who allegedly purchased one of the victims. The legal proceedings are being closely followed, as the community hopes for justice and a brighter future for the rescued victims.

A brave victim’s testimony has been pivotal in shedding light on the broader network of traffickers. As this case unfolds, it highlights the significant efforts of law enforcement and the community in combating human trafficking and supporting the victims’ journey to recovery.
