Absa Bank Ghana LTD, in partnership with the Black Star Marathon Foundation, has officially
launched the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon, scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26 July
2025, with participants starting and finishing at Accra’s iconic Independence Square.
The event is designed to attract elite athletes, recreational runners, and create a platform for
social engagement. The marathon will feature multiple race categories, including a full
42.2km marathon, a 10km race, and dedicated wheelchair races.
“This marathon serves as a platform for celebrating personal achievement, while also
creating opportunities for social impact and community involvement. It aligns with the
bank’s values of inclusion, stewardship, and courage,” said Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, Director
of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Ghana.
She mentioned that a significant portion of the funds raised will support kidney dialysis
treatment for underprivileged patients in Ghana, part of a broader effort to raise awareness
of the country’s rising burden of kidney disease.
In addition, she noted, proceeds will support athlete development programmes, community health campaigns, and youth empowerment initiatives in underserved communities.
Dr. Eric Kwame Adae, founder of the Black Star Marathon, explained that the event aims to go beyond athletic competition. “This marathon is about pursuing a cause, celebrating
resilience, encouraging togetherness, and inspiring collective triumph. It belongs to every
athlete, every first timer, every para-athlete, and every heartbeat that refuses to quit.”
Professor Kobby Mensah, Director at the Ghana Tourism Authority, described the marathon
as an important and socially meaningful initiative.
“When people commit to doing things right and with integrity, we must show up and
support,” he said. “This marathon exemplifies that spirit.”
In addition to cash prizes, winners will receive finisher medals, certificates, and other
rewards.
The 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon is expected to attract participants from across Ghana
and beyond. Organisers encourage early registration via the event website,
