Police recover equipment; suspects remanded for further investigations
A coordinated operation by the Western Central Police Command has led to the arrest of 22 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities across communities in the Western Region, including Dominase Nkwanta and Adjakaa Manso.
Deputy Western Central Regional Police Commander, ACP Bismark Agyapong, told journalists that the suspects, aged between 19 and 30 years, were picked up during an intelligence-driven swoop on April 8, 2025. Among those arrested are Albert Adu Bonsra, Stephen Kwakye, Richard Atigah, Yaw Menanyi, and Al-Mustapha Alidu.
The police also recovered 11 pumping machines, seven shovels, a pick-axe, and two chamfan machines used in the illegal mining activities. The suspects have been remanded by the Asankrangwa District Court to assist with further investigations, with the case file set to be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department.
ACP Agyapong warned that anyone involved in galamsey will face the full force of the law. He called on the public to support the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the environment.
The crackdown is part of broader efforts by authorities to halt environmental degradation and secure Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
