A 23-year-old, Sumaila Abdul Rahman, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Mampong Magistrate Court for stealing water meters, marking a significant step in the fight against water-related offences in the Ashanti Region. Rahman, of mixed Ghanaian and Nigerian descent, was arrested on Friday, October 11, 2024, and swiftly brought before the court where Chief Inspector Richard Obeng Asare led the prosecution. He was found guilty and sentenced on Monday, October 14, 2024.
This sentencing forms part of a broader initiative to combat illegal activities that threaten the integrity of the region’s water supply. In a related case, Priscilla Amofa is currently being held at the Kumasi Central Police Station for illegally reconnecting her water supply without paying her outstanding bills. Her accomplice, Nana Adu, is still on the run for a similar offence.
The swift action by the authorities underscores their dedication to safeguarding the community’s water supply. The management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Ashanti Region has called on residents to report any suspicious activity related to water theft or illegal reconnections, ensuring better service for all.
These developments highlight the importance of adhering to utility regulations and serve as a warning to those who engage in illegal water activities. The authorities remain committed to ensuring accountability and protecting vital community resources.
