Foreign Affairs Minister Updates Parliament on Deportation Cases

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that 50 out of 150 Ghanaians currently detained in the United States have received final deportation orders. These individuals are expected to return to Ghana by mid-2025.

Speaking in Parliament on March 13, 2025, Ablakwa revealed that the detainees face deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry. He noted that three Ghanaians have already been processed for deportation, with their departures scheduled for March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025.

The remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed. Ablakwa also highlighted that one detainee, released on medical grounds, is receiving care, while ten others have been interviewed by the Ghanaian Embassy to verify their nationality and ensure fair hearings.
