In the wake of the recent leaked tape detailing an alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and manipulate the 2024 elections, Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the investigative committee, has issued a stern warning to those whose voices are heard on the recording. He called on them to come forward and admit their involvement or be prepared to face serious consequences for perjury.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM in Accra, Mr. Akyea emphasized the committee’s commitment to ascertaining the individuals on the tape and understanding the context of their statements. He stressed that if any person’s voice is identified, they must provide a truthful account of the circumstances surrounding their remarks. The committee will then thoroughly interrogate the matter, considering any potential security implications as the country approaches the election year.
The leaked tape, purportedly containing plans by the government to oust Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from the position of Inspector General of Police, sparked national concern. In response, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, established a seven-member committee to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter.
The committee, chaired by Samuel Atta-Akyea, includes a technical expert, Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan, who is a lawyer and a human rights specialist. Other members from the majority side are Hon. Yaw Boamah and Hon. Ophelia Mensah, while the minority side comprises Vice Chair, Honourable James Agalga, and Honourable Eric Opoku and Honourable Peter Toobu.
The primary objectives of the committee are twofold: first, to verify the authenticity of the leaked tape, and second, to investigate the allegations contained therein. Additionally, the committee has been assigned the task of making recommendations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The nation’s eyes are on the committee as it conducts its investigations, seeking transparency and accountability in order to preserve the integrity of the democratic process and the rule of law. The public demands that all involved parties fully cooperate with the probe to establish the truth and uphold Justice.
