The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Asiedu Nketiah, has demanded a comprehensive investigation into all government appointees’ residences following the alleged theft of substantial funds from the private residence of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah. Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on July 25, 2023, Asiedu Nketiah expressed his lack of surprise over the incident and accused the current government and its appointees of engaging in corrupt practices while deceiving the public.
Expressing concern about the pervasive corruption within the administration, Asiedu Nketiah urged for decisive action to hold those responsible accountable. He stated, “For Cecilia Dapaah’s case, I am not surprised because we have been saying often times that the aim of this government is to deceive Ghanaians to amass wealth and use the same wealth to stay in power.”
Asiedu Nketiah further stressed the need for immediate action and suggested that the Special Prosecutor should order the submission of passports from all government appointees and conduct a nationwide search of their residences. He argued that such an operation could potentially recover an amount of money surpassing the bailout sum Ghana is seeking from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, resigned from her position on July 22, 2023, following the discovery of stolen funds at her Abelemkpe residence. Subsequently, she was arrested and released on bail by the Special Prosecutor after a search was conducted at her residence. The police have submitted the case docket to the Attorney-General for advice.
In the wake of the ongoing investigation, some relatives of the former minister have also been questioned about the stolen monies.
Asiedu Nketiah’s call for a nationwide probe of government appointees has added fuel to the already contentious issue of corruption within the current administration. The demand for accountability and transparency is resonating with a growing number of Ghanaians who seek to see those responsible for corruption face appropriate consequences.
