Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) Company Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education to sponsor 50 bright and financially needy students from communities impacted by the company. The sponsorship is aimed at enabling these students to pursue Engineering and Computer Science courses at seven public universities in Ghana.
Under the MoU, BOST will provide a total scholarship package of GHC1.5 million, which covers accommodation, tuition fees, a laptop, and a stipend for the selected students to complete their respective courses over a four-year period. Each student will receive GHC7,500 annually as part of the scholarship scheme.
The decision to offer these scholarships aligns with BOST’s commitment to its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The company actively engaged in identifying deserving candidates from its impacted communities, focusing on those who would benefit most from the opportunity.
The scholarship program arose from a proposal made by the Ministry of Education to BOST in December 2021. The collaboration between the two entities resulted in the successful screening and selection of 50 students from various communities. These students, some of whom had no science background in high school, were provided with a one-year intensive pre-engineering program at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). This program allowed students with non-science backgrounds to catch up and excel in core subjects like Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, expressed his gratitude towards BOST for making these scholarships available, which not only support students to pursue engineering but also provide opportunities for those who may have otherwise been excluded. He emphasized how BOST’s commitment to these students’ education will have a positive impact on their future and contribute to the nation’s development.
