Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide warns of potential fallout
Ghanaian artist Black Sherif may face a risk of losing support in the Nigerian music market due to his endorsement of the #PlayGhana initiative, warns Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Adesope explained that some bloggers in Nigeria are displeased with Black Sherif’s support for the initiative, which advocates for the consistent promotion of Ghanaian music throughout the country.
This reaction comes after notable figures like Samini, Reggie Rockstone, DJ Mensah, and Smallgod emphasized the importance of elevating Ghanaian music during a press conference to launch the #PlayGhana initiative. They highlighted the hindrance caused by the prevalent dominance of foreign music in the industry’s growth.
Despite Black Sherif expressing solidarity with the initiative and emphasizing that it’s not about blame but a united effort to champion Ghanaian music, Adesope, also known as Shopsydoo, raised concerns. He noted that bloggers might target Black Sherif, a relatively new artist compared to established figures like Reggie Rockstone or Samini, who may be perceived as less likely to fight back.
Adesope expressed, “Let’s target this one; he won’t be able to fight back.” He highlighted the potential impact on Black Sherif, who holds significant popularity in Nigeria and has a substantial fanbase that values his music even more than some local artistes.
The situation underscores the complexities of the cross-border dynamics in the music industry and the potential consequences for artists who take a stance on initiatives that involve the promotion of national music over foreign dominance.
