ECG Officials Arrive at Parliament Premises for Disconnection
Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have arrived at the premises of Parliament with the intention to disconnect the legislative house from the national power grid. This action is in response to outstanding debts owed by Parliament, totaling GH₵23 million.
The ECG has been actively pursuing revenue collection efforts over the past year, and Parliament’s debt is part of their aggressive drive to recover outstanding payments.
Witnesses have reported seeing ECG officials around key power transformers that supply electricity to Parliament, indicating that the disconnection may occur imminently. If the disconnection proceeds as planned, Parliament may be left without power to conduct its business for the day.
This move follows a similar action taken against Accra Academy Senior High School, which was recently disconnected from the power grid due to arrears amounting to GHS480,000.
Speaking on the matter, an ECG representative highlighted the company’s need to address consistent debt issues and emphasized the necessity of their revenue collection efforts to ensure operational sustainability.
