Celebrating a 95-year legacy in Ghanaian photography with distinguished guests and vibrant performances
e-Ananse Library recently hosted a grand “Durbar and Cultural Celebration” to honor the legacy of the esteemed photographer James Barnor. As the first Ghanaian photojournalist, Barnor’s work has had a profound impact on both traditional and modern photography.
The “James Barnor at 95 Festival,” held over the weekend at e-Ananse Library in East Legon, drew many distinguished figures from the art community. Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, daughter of the Ghanaian president and Director of the Creative Arts Industry, was among the attendees. Other notable guests included Dr. Prof. El Anatsui, Prof. Ablade Glover, Victor Butler, Willie Fugah, Wiz Kudowor, Edem Dei-Tutu (representing UNESCO Ghana), Kate Tamakloe (granddaughter of J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije), and Ms. Valentina Mintah, Founder of e-Ananse Library.
Young fans from schools such as Jack and Jill School, North Legon School Complex, Expo Best Child School, and Witty Kids International School also joined the celebration. James Barnor was accompanied by Lisa Lovett-Smith, the producer of the James Barnor 95 Festival, Clémentine de la Féronnière, and the festival organizing team.
They also explored a digital photo exhibition featuring Barnor’s iconic works. The event featured a poetry recital by Akusika, a lively high-life music performance by Kwanpa Band, and an impressive cultural performance by Abibigromma.
A highlight of the celebration was a conversation with James Barnor, moderated by Twinsdntbeg, offering the audience an insightful look into his illustrious career in photography. Mr. Barnor expressed his deep appreciation to e-Ananse Library for hosting the event in his honor.
