The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 49th anniversary with notable achievements in regional integration, peace, security, and good governance. Founded in 1975, ECOWAS has transitioned from an organization to a community, promoting economic and political unity in West Africa.

Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, highlighted these successes during a high-level event at the UN headquarters in June 2024.

One of ECOWAS’s major achievements is the protocol on the free movement of persons, goods, and services, allowing citizens to reside in any member state without visas. This initiative has facilitated economic integration and cooperation across the region. Additionally, ECOWAS has played a crucial role in stabilizing conflict zones, particularly through its multilateral armed forces, ECOMOG.

Despite these successes, ECOWAS faces challenges, including violent extremism and political instability in some member states. However, the organization continues to promote democracy, human rights, and economic development. Ambassador Musah emphasized the importance of solidarity and integration, urging member states to remain united in addressing regional issues.
