An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to four individuals accused of stealing power from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The accused—Ernest Afatsawu, Wisdom Sewlonu, Ali Yakubu, and Ranlian Shan—pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including abetment of crime, conspiracy to commit crime, and stealing. The court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, set bail at GH₵400,000 for each, with two sureties and a weekly reporting requirement to the police.
Shan, a Chinese national, was required to surrender his passport to the court. The prosecution, led by Mrs. Dorcas Felli, revealed that Afatsawu, an electrician, tampered with the meter installed in Yakubu’s and Shan’s residences. The case involves Nyame Aye Bi Electrical Company Ltd., a third-party contractor for ECG.
The accused were arrested on August 2, 2024, following investigations, and their defense lawyers argued for bail, citing their fixed residences and low flight risk. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat power theft and ensure accountability in Ghana’s energy sector.
