MTN Ghana has acknowledged the growing challenge of mobile money (MoMo) fraud, which poses a significant threat to its efforts to promote financial inclusion across the country. Speaking at the launch of MTN’s 15th Anniversary celebrations in Ho, Shaibu Haruna, CEO of Mobile Money Limited, emphasized the importance of combating fraud to protect customers and maintain trust in the MoMo platform.
Since its introduction in 2009, MoMo has revolutionized financial transactions in Ghana, enabling millions of people, particularly those in rural areas, to access banking services. However, the rise in fraudulent activities has become a major obstacle, with scammers increasingly targeting MoMo users.
MTN has prioritized enhancing its security systems and collaborating with stakeholders to address the issue. The company is also intensifying public education efforts, urging customers to safeguard their personal information and remain vigilant against scams. Haruna stressed that every customer is the first line of defense in preventing fraud.
Despite these challenges, MTN remains committed to expanding financial inclusion in Ghana. The MoMo platform has not only empowered individuals but also transformed businesses, facilitated access to essential services, and simplified government transactions. As the company celebrates its 15th anniversary, it continues to focus on improving security measures to ensure that MoMo remains a reliable and safe financial tool for all Ghanaians.
