Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has taken decisive action against illegal mining in the Asante kingdom by destooling three chiefs from Sabronum. The Gyaasihene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene were stripped of their titles during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at Manhyia Palace. Their involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ led to their removal, signaling the kingdom’s intolerance of practices that harm the environment and local communities.

Illegal mining, or galamsey, has been a persistent issue in the region, with many chiefs and leaders facing criticism for their perceived complicity. The Asantehene’s bold decision to destool the chiefs reflects a broader effort to combat this environmental menace. The destoolment sends a clear message that the Asante kingdom will take firm action against those involved in activities that threaten its natural resources and the well-being of its people.

Following the destoolment, Kofi Asante has been nominated and selected as the new Sabronum Manhene, marking a fresh start for the community. The move is seen as a critical step toward restoring integrity and environmental stewardship in the region. The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding the Asantehene’s firm stance, while others express concerns about the implications for the destooled chiefs and their families.

As the Asante kingdom continues its fight against galamsey, the destoolment of these chiefs serves as a reminder of the seriousness with which the issue is being addressed. The community now looks forward to a future free from the challenges posed by illegal mining, under the new leadership of Kofi Asante.
