The Jamestown Fishing Port project in Accra is nearing completion, with Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Kweku Ofori Asiamah, set to sign the acceptance certificate soon. Following an official tour of the facility on Monday, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the $50 million project, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance Ghana’s fisheries sector. The project, funded by the Chinese government, aims to improve infrastructure for fishing activities in Ghana.
The state-of-the-art facility, located on 60,000 square meters of land, features modern amenities, including an ice-making plant, cold storage, workshops, a fish market, and ancillary services. The port is expected to significantly boost the local fishing industry by providing better storage and processing capabilities for fish products, benefiting both the economy and the local community.
The Jamestown Fishing Port is the largest project funded by China in recent years, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations. Li Yaohong, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, emphasized the importance of the project in strengthening Ghana-China relations and promoting sustainable development in Ghana’s fisheries sector.
Once the acceptance certificate is signed, the project will be handed over to the Ghanaian government for official commissioning. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in supporting economic growth and improving the livelihoods of those involved in Ghana’s fishing industry.
