The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has issued a warning to the government, announcing plans for a potential nationwide strike in November if their long-standing grievances are not urgently addressed. Representing mortuary workers across Ghana, MOWAG is demanding improvements in wages, safer working conditions, and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect workers’ health.

Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG, expressed frustration over the government’s handling of these issues, which he says have persisted since 2019 with minimal action taken. Speaking to Citi News, Jordan emphasized that the government’s repeated requests for additional data appear to be delaying negotiations, despite years of attempted engagement by MOWAG to resolve these matters. He emphasized that inadequate safety protocols and a lack of PPE continue to endanger the health and safety of mortuary workers nationwide.

Jordan noted that if no action is taken, MOWAG plans to strike at the end of October or early November. “We’re providing the data the government requested, but that doesn’t deter us. If our demands aren’t met, we’ll proceed with our strike as planned,” he stated.
