Daniel Obirikwa Adjin has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Accra High Court for the murder of his elder brother, William Adjin, in 2017 at Mamprobi, Accra. A jury delivered a 5-2 guilty verdict, leading to the conviction and sentencing by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons. The court informed Adjin of his right to appeal within one month.
During the trial, Adjin claimed self-defense, alleging his brother attacked him by grabbing his testicles, prompting him to retaliate. He also attributed his actions to intoxication and confusion after losing money in his room. However, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including a postmortem report citing “Exsanguination and Multiple Stabbed Injuries” as the cause of death.
The incident occurred on March 19, 2017, when the deceased called for help during a struggle with Adjin. Witnesses, including the deceased’s son, Daniel Adjei Adjin, attempted to stop the attack. Neighbors managed to subdue Adjin, but not before the knife broke during the altercation. William Adjin was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries an hour later.
Adjin fled to James Town after the incident but was apprehended when he threatened other family members. He was handed over to the police and later prosecuted. The defense expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, while prosecutors urged Adjin to seek repentance during his imprisonment.
