The Pig Farmers Association of Ghana has on Saturday, 30th November successfully marked the climax of Porktober 2024, a celebration that has showcased the strength, innovation, and dedication of the pig farming community in Ghana.
According to Mr. Kwame Appiah Danquah, President of the Pig Farmers Association of Ghana, the celebration has been a testament to the transformative powers of collaboration in the industry.
Throughout the month-long celebration, the Association has organized various activities, including field trips and training sessions, aimed at enhancing the skills of farmers and inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders. The celebration has also highlighted the growing partnership between farmers, stakeholders, and organizations such as KIC and GIZ, which are working together to build sustainable businesses, embrace technology, and create value chains that uplift communities.
Despite the challenges faced by the industry, including high feed costs and fluctuating production costs, the Association has emphasized the importance of supporting one another and pushing for policies and initiatives that will scale operations, improve animal husbandry practices, and ensure that Ghana achieves self-sufficiency in meat production.
As part of the celebration, the Association has advised its members to start improving their biosecurity measures, as farm bio-certification is set to begin in the coming year.
Additionally, the Association has announced a price increase for pig and pork products, effective December 15, 2024, with a minimum price of GHc 35 per kilogram for live weight and GHc 50 per kilogram for carcass.
Mr. George Ayarick, General secretary of PFAG, also encouraged non-members to join the association to ensure more cohesion and progress as well as development within the pigry industry.
The success of Porktober 2024 is a testament to the growth and development of the pig farming industry in Ghana.
