The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of 10 additional suspects in connection with violent incidents following the December 7 elections. This latest development brings the total number of arrests to 107.
The police reported multiple cases of lawlessness nationwide, including attacks on government offices such as Ghana Gas, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Passport Office. Crowds also gathered at cantonments demanding jobs. A joint operation with the Ghana Armed Forces was conducted to restore order in affected areas.
During one incident at the Ghana Gas office, security personnel came under attack, leading to injuries, including one soldier sustaining significant harm. Police also revealed that some alleged supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) broke into a police station and freed detained suspects. Authorities are actively pursuing the escaped individuals.
Addressing journalists in Accra, Police Director of Public Affairs ACP Grace Ansah Akrofi condemned the ongoing violence and cautioned against further attacks on offices or private residences. She emphasized that while police efforts to disperse crowds have avoided the use of firearms, force may be employed if the unrest escalates further.
