Ghana’s Black Maidens began their WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup campaign in style with an impressive 4-1 victory over Benin at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence.
Priscilla Mensah opened the scoring for Ghana within the first six minutes, setting the tone for a dominant first half. Christina Ashiaku doubled the lead in the 17th minute and went on to score a penalty in the 44th minute before completing her hat trick just before halftime.
Benin managed to pull one back in the 60th minute through Yenido Gandonou, but it was little more than a consolation.
In his post-match interview, Ghana’s head coach, Nana Joe Adakwa, emphasized that the team’s primary focus is on grooming and developing players. He acknowledged the strength of the Benin side, which limited Ghana’s second-half chances and led to their lone conceded goal.
Christina Ashiaku’s stellar performance earned her the Most Valuable Player award for the match.
The Black Maidens will look to build on this strong start as the tournament progresses.
