Ablakwa Calls for Embassy Registration Amid U.S. Deportation Plans
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged Ghanaians living abroad to register with their embassies to receive consular support, especially as deportation concerns rise.
His remarks come in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy prioritizing the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals, with the U.S. reportedly identifying 18,000 Indian nationals who entered illegally.
156 Ghanaians Face Imminent Deportation
Ablakwa revealed that 156 Ghanaians are currently facing deportation from the U.S., highlighting the urgent need for embassy support.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on February 8, he stated:
“This deportation exercise raises the bigger issue of how we protect the welfare of Ghanaians abroad.”
New Consular Assistance Measures
The Foreign Minister assured that the government is working on enhanced consular support to safeguard the rights and well-being of Ghanaians overseas. He encouraged all Ghanaians living abroad to get registered with their respective embassies for assistance when needed.
“We are going to see new paradigms in terms of consular assistance,” Ablakwa noted.
The government’s proactive approach aims to ensure that Ghanaians abroad receive the necessary protection and aid in case of legal or immigration issues.
