Ablakwa Unveils 24-Hour Passport Office Plan Under New Economy Model
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to make the passport office operate 24 hours a day under the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the Mahama administration.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on February 8, Ablakwa revealed that 75,000 passports remain uncollected due to accessibility challenges, underscoring the need for a more efficient system.

“Will you believe me if I tell you that there are 75,000 passports that have not been collected at the passport office?” Ablakwa asked.
Improved Passport Application and Delivery System
The government aims to implement a system that allows applicants to apply and receive passports at their provided addresses, eliminating unnecessary back-and-forth visits.

“We want a system where you can apply and have your passport delivered to you through the address that you provide,” Ablakwa explained.
First Step Toward a Fully Operational 24-Hour Economy
The 24-hour passport office initiative is expected to be a major step toward Ghana’s broader 24-hour economy model, ensuring better service delivery and efficiency.
“For the first time, I want us to have the passport office operate 24 hours. That will be the first step toward the general operation of the 24-hour economy,” Ablakwa added.
The move is expected to streamline passport processing, reduce long waiting periods, and improve accessibility for Ghanaians across the country.
