Karpowership Threatens Shutdown Over Ghana’s $379M Energy Debt
Ghana’s power sector is on the verge of a crisis as Karpowership, the operator of the Aboadze power barge, has warned of an electricity supply suspension unless the government settles an outstanding $379 million debt.
The threat was issued during a February 10, 2025, meeting between Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor and Karpowership officials.
The state-run Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) owes the massive sum, adding to the country’s escalating energy sector liabilities, which have now surpassed $3 billion.
Minister Jinapor has urged Karpowership to delay any drastic actions while the new administration works on payment solutions. However, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) flagging Ghana’s energy debt as a major economic risk, time is running out for intervention.
If Karpowership follows through on its shutdown threat, Ghana could face severe power outages, disrupting industries, businesses, and households nationwide.
The IMF has recommended urgent reforms to prevent a total collapse of the energy sector, but resolving the crisis will require swift action from the government.
