Cholera Outbreak in Ghana: The Health Ministry Has 719 Confirmed Cases, 49 Deaths Reported
Ghana has recorded 719 confirmed cholera cases and 49 deaths since the outbreak began in October 2024, affecting five regions, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh told Parliament on February 18, 2025.
The outbreak, which started in Greater Accra, has since spread to the Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern regions. In total, 6,145 suspected cases have been reported.
Mintah-Akandoh assured Parliament of the government’s commitment to controlling the outbreak despite resource limitations. He detailed ongoing response efforts, including:
✔ Enhanced surveillance and active case tracking
✔ Increased laboratory testing for timely diagnosis
✔ Public education campaigns on sanitation and hygiene
✔ Environmental assessments to address contamination sources
The Minister cited poor sanitation, unsafe water, and unhygienic food handling as major factors fueling the outbreak, urging citizens to adopt better hygiene practices.
“We are fully committed to fighting this outbreak and will continue working with local authorities and international partners to bring the situation under control,” he said.
The government has also activated regional and district public health emergency committees to ensure coordinated response efforts in all affected areas.
Despite these interventions, cholera remains a public health concern in Ghana, emphasizing the urgent need for improved water and sanitation infrastructure to prevent future outbreaks.
