Mahama Inaugurates Council of State, Two Seats Pending

President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in members of the Council of State at a ceremony held at Jubilee House on February 18, 2025.

The swearing-in, however, did not include representatives for North East and Ashanti Regions, as elections in these regions were re-run on February 17. The elected representatives, Saaka Abuba (North East) and Yaw Owusu Obimpeh (Ashanti), are expected to be sworn in at a later date.

Role of the Council of State

As outlined in Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State serves as an advisory body to the President, offering guidance on governance and national matters.

Composition of the Council of State

The Council consists of:

  • Presidential appointees, including:
  • A former Chief Justice
  • A former Chief of Defence Staff
  • A former Inspector General of Police
  • The President of the National House of Chiefs
  • Regional representatives, elected by an electoral college
  • Eleven additional members appointed by the President

With this swearing-in, President Mahama’s administration takes another step toward strengthening governance and ensuring advisory support from seasoned leaders and regional representatives.
