International Missing Children’s Day, observed on May 25, is a global reminder of the urgent need to protect children from abduction and exploitation.
In Accra, Missing Children Ghana, a nonprofit organization, marked this day with a fundraising event at the Marriott Hotel, bringing together local and international dignitaries to raise awareness and support for child safety initiatives.
The event featured a fundraising campaign, awareness-raising activities, and a panel discussion on issues related to missing children.
The Executive Director of EOCO, COP Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah, the chairperson of the occasion emphasized the significance of International Missing Children’s Day and appealed for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
She demonstrated the power of unity in addressing the critical issue of missing children.
“By working together, we can create a safer world for our children. Let us join forces to find our missing children and prevent further abductions. Together, we can make a difference” she stated.
The event highlighted crucial measures to prevent child abductions, including: Teaching children their name, address, and phone number, encouraging children to trust their instincts and say no to strangers.
Keeping a recent photo of your child and storing it safely, establishing a family emergency plan and keeping children close in public places and educating children on online safety and cyberbullying.
Solidarity messages from various organizations, including Plan International, UNICEF, Marriott hotel and the Ghana Italian Women Association among others were also shared.
The various groups and entities also pledged to support the worthy cause initiated by the Missing Children Ghana.
