Musician and Pundit Criticizes Ghana’s Reliance on Foreign Aid, Citing Implications for National Sovereignty.

Ghanaian musician and entertainment pundit, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has weighed in on Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, stating that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not assent to the legislation due to Ghana’s dependence on foreign aid.

A Plus emphasized that Ghana’s reliance on financial assistance from developed nations undermines its sovereignty. He argued that until Ghana develops strong domestic policies, Western countries will continue to exert influence and control over the nation.

“Akufo-Addo cannot assent to the bill due to Ghana’s dependence on foreign aid. Without financial support from the international community, Ghana struggles to achieve true independence,” he stated.

He further added, “Whether Ghana likes it or not, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill would not be passed. We are bound to accept Western culture as long as we remain dependent on foreign aid.”

The legislation, which was passed in Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ activities and prohibits their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
