The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly led by the MCE, Hon. Frank Nkansah is set to launch a three-day decongestion exercise at the Old Agbogbloshie Onion Market from February 24 to 26, 2026. The move aims to clear the area of squatters and unauthorized occupants, following a previous clearance in July 2021.
The Municipal Chief Executive Frank Nkansah announced the exercise during a visit to the site with the Greater Accra Regional Minister.
The 2021 clearance, supported by armed police, evicted an estimated 10,000 scrap dealers, but they have since returned, reclaiming portions of the land.
Hon. Nkansah emphasized that the exercise will involve collaboration with local government and the Regional Coordinating Council to improve the area for commuters and market women.
“We are going to do the exercise from the 24th to the 27th of next month,” Nkansah said. “We are going to decongest and break down most of the facilities that the regional minister has directed us to. We are going to do that in collaboration with local government and RCC as a whole to ensure that the place becomes very good for commuters and even market women.”
Nkansah warned that illegal activities would not be tolerated, adding that a police post and other mechanisms would be put in place to ensure the assembly maintains control over the area.
“Those who are doing anything illegal, that one will take you out of the place. But those who are doing something legally, we are going to put a police post and other mechanism to ensure that the assembly is in full control over the exercises over there.”
