On Friday, 30th May, the Accra Basketball League held a seminar at the University of Ghana Stadium to clarify basketball rules, address rule amendments, and engage players, coaches, and fans.
A pre-event survey received 22 responses: 17 players, 2 coaches, and 3 fans. Most concerns focused on officiating standards.
Mr. Iddrisu, Vice President Technical at the Ghana Basketball Association and a FIBA instructor, led the seminar. He walked attendees through key rules, new regulations, and updates. Mr. Iddrisu emphasized, “We are not going anywhere with what we are doing if we don’t respect each other.”
Dr. Eric Opoku Antwi, Vice Chairman of the Accra Basketball League, told journalists, “This program came from suggestions made at the start of the league. We plan a referee refresher course next and have asked teams to submit incidents for review.”
On the turnout, Dr. Opoku Antwi added, “I believe attendance could have been higher. Introducing something new takes time. The timing and day of the week affected participation, but future sessions will grow.”
The seminar covered eight rules and around fifty critical articles. Dr. Opoku Antwi stressed, “At the heart of basketball is mutual respect. The game is played between two teams, with referees ensuring fairness and declaring a clear winner.”
Participants found the session informative, with key concerns addressed, marking a vital step toward raising the league’s professional standards.
