The highly anticipated annual opera concert, ‘Accra Goes to Opera,’ is set to captivate audiences at the ICGC Christ Temple East, Bush Road, on November 24, 2024. This year’s edition promises an exceptional blend of talent, culture, and musical diversity, bringing an unforgettable operatic experience to the heart of Accra.

Headlining the concert is the acclaimed music group Lumina, whose performances blend operatic pop and uniquely Ghanaian compositions. Recently accepted into the prestigious Opera Studio program at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Austria, Lumina will showcase fresh approaches and arrangements inspired by their AIMS experience, designed to engage both new and seasoned opera audiences.

Adding to the excitement, celebrated South African opera singers Tiego and Dorothy will join Lumina on stage, delivering powerful performances that merge opera, classical music, and African cultural influences. The event also aims to further a United African agenda through music, underscoring a commitment to artistic collaboration and excellence across the continent.

Amos George Tetteh, Lumina’s Artistic Director, shared his vision for the concert, stating, “We are dedicated to presenting innovative pieces by reimagining traditional compositions for contemporary audiences. Our collaborations and co-productions explore new forms of operatic expression.” Tetteh also emphasized the unique opportunity for Accra to witness an array of local and international talent in a show that celebrates both heritage and modern interpretations of opera.

As part of an ongoing cultural initiative, ‘Accra Goes to Opera’ is more than a concert—it’s a movement that promotes classical music and artistic brilliance in Ghana. This annual event is poised to become a hallmark celebration of opera, bridging traditional roots with a global, modern perspective.
