Mayor Allotey Sets Deadline for Traders to Clear Accra Streets
Accra’s Mayor, Michael Allotey, has issued a final directive to street traders illegally operating on pavements and busy roads, mandating them to relocate by Tuesday, May 20, 2025, or face forcible eviction. Speaking at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) City Hall, Allotey emphasized the need to address safety risks and urban congestion caused by unauthorized trading.
The mayor highlighted the overcrowding of pavements, originally designed for pedestrians, which have been overtaken by petty traders, leading to hazardous and unsanitary conditions. He described the situation as unsustainable, noting that traders’ activities have spilled onto streets, exacerbating traffic issues in areas like Okaishie, Circle, and Kaneshie.

Allotey clarified that the initiative is not aimed at targeting individuals but is part of a broader effort to enhance urban mobility and cleanliness. The AMA has engaged with market women, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, and police to ensure a coordinated approach. Enforcement will commence on May 20, starting in Okaishie and extending to other key areas.
Urging traders to comply voluntarily, the mayor reiterated his commitment to a cleaner, safer Accra. “The streets are for vehicles, not trade,” he stated, warning that non-compliance will lead to enforced removals. Allotey’s ultimatum underscores his pledge to improve the city’s infrastructure and livability for all residents.
