Blaze Controlled, Investigation Launched

A fire broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre in Cantonments at 1:00 a.m. on August 4, 2025, destroying the first floor and its contents. The Ghana National Fire Service’s initial engine from National Headquarters arrived to find a rapidly spreading blaze fueled by strong winds, requiring intense firefighting efforts.

Five additional fire appliances from Flagstaff House, Circle, Accra City, Ministries, and a Rapid Intervention Vehicle were deployed to contain the fire. The ground floor, including eight offices and the East Wing, was salvaged, preventing spread to nearby properties, with no injuries reported, per the Fire Service’s statement.

The fire, which caused significant structural damage, prompted the Ghana National Fire Service to launch an investigation to determine its cause. Preliminary reports suggest electrical faults or arson as possible triggers, though no official conclusion has been reached pending forensic analysis.

The centre, a hub for tourism promotion under the Ghana Tourism Authority, housed critical records and promotional materials. The loss of the first floor disrupts operations, but salvaged offices ensure partial continuity. The incident follows a similar 2023 fire at the National Museum, highlighting urban fire risks.

The Fire Service commended the rapid response of its teams and urged the public to await the investigation findings. Authorities are coordinating with the Ministry of Tourism to assess damage and plan recovery, ensuring minimal impact on Ghana’s tourism sector.
