The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported a cholera outbreak in the Ada enclave of the Greater Accra Region, which has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and 43 confirmed cases across the Ada East and Ada West districts. Dr. Frank Bekoe, Director of Public Health at GHS, confirmed the figures and emphasized the urgency of containment efforts to manage the rising cases and prevent further fatalities.
Currently, Ada East has recorded 37 cases, while Ada West has reported six cases. GHS is prioritizing early detection of new cases, tracking contacts, and monitoring affected areas closely to reduce further transmission of the disease.
Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, spreads rapidly through contaminated food and water, particularly in areas lacking adequate sanitation and clean water access. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, and can be fatal if not treated swiftly. Authorities are reinforcing health interventions and community awareness to mitigate the outbreak and ensure rapid medical responses for new cases.
