In response to a cholera outbreak in the district, authorities in Ada West have banned the serving of food and drinks at funerals. The Ghana Health Service declared the outbreak in both Ada East and Ada West on October 11, 2024, with Ada East recording the most cases. So far, Ada West has confirmed four cases. As part of efforts to contain the spread, the District Security Coordinating Council implemented the funeral ban last weekend, with police ensuring compliance.
Sampson Tetteh, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ada West, explained that the water supply problem is a major contributing factor to the outbreak, and efforts are underway to resolve this issue. In the meantime, water tankers have been deployed to provide water to affected communities, and public health campaigns promoting hygiene practices, including the use of Veronica Buckets and sanitizers, are ongoing.
“We are intensifying public hygiene measures and working with all stakeholders to ensure the situation is contained,” Tetteh noted. He also mentioned that the district is focusing on “Operation Clean Your Frontage” and communal labor to maintain cleanliness. Additionally, the DCE expressed hope that the completion of the Agenda 111 facility in the district will significantly improve healthcare services.
The District Security Coordinating Council plans to review these measures in the coming days to assess their effectiveness.
