The Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a sharp rise in mpox-related deaths across the continent, with 107 new fatalities and over 3,000 cases recorded in the past week. Dr. Jean Kaseya, the CDC’s Director-General, described the escalating death toll as “unacceptable” and called for stronger cross-border surveillance to contain the outbreak.

Mpox, a virus related to smallpox, has been spreading rapidly in recent months, with men and children under 15 recording the highest positivity rates. While African nations have begun receiving vaccines, the supply remains insufficient to meet the continent’s needs. Dr. Kaseya emphasized the importance of continued vaccination efforts, noting that 3 million doses are required to fully address the outbreak in Congo, the epicenter of the crisis.

The Africa CDC is working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to implement a $600 million response plan, which includes increased testing and resource allocation to 14 affected countries. Efforts are underway to secure additional vaccine doses from the European Union and other global partners.
