Fight Over Same-Sex Proposal Leads to Disciplinary Action

Agona Swedru Senior High School indefinitely suspended 25 final-year students on August 4, 2025, following a violent clash sparked by a rejected same-sex relationship proposal. The incident began when a male student declined another’s romantic advance and informed peers, who encouraged a deceptive setup to ambush the proposer.

The ambush led to a physical assault, prompting a retaliatory attack by the proposer’s dormitory mates, escalating into a larger brawl. Headmistress Golda Esi Andam confirmed to Onua News that all involved students received a fair hearing before the suspension, emphasizing adherence to the Ghana Education Service (GES) code of conduct.

The suspended students, part of the 2025 WASSCE cohort, will write their final exams under parental escort, ensuring their right to education is preserved. The school’s disciplinary committee identified the students through witness statements and CCTV footage, confirming the organized nature of the attacks.

Mrs. Andam emphasized that the suspensions aim to deter future violations, urging students to adhere to school rules. The incident, affecting 2.8% of the school’s 900 final-year students, has sparked local debate about student conduct and the handling of sensitive issues like same-sex proposals in schools.

The GES is reviewing the case to ensure compliance with national disciplinary guidelines, and counseling will be offered to the affected students. The school’s action aligns with its zero-tolerance policy on violence, amid broader efforts to maintain discipline across Ghana’s 700 SHSs.
