High Court Orders Circuit Court to Submit Records

The Amasaman High Court rejected a bail application for Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, known as Nana Agradaa, on July 15, 2025, as she appeals a 15-year prison sentence for defrauding by pretense and charlatanic advertisements. Her legal team, led by Dr. Bernard Kofi Asamoah, confirmed the court’s decision to Citi News, noting an order for the Circuit Court to provide all relevant appeal records.

On July 3, 2025, the Circuit Court, under Justice Evelyn Asamoah, convicted Agradaa, sentencing her to 15 years with hard labor and a GH¢300 fine for fraudulent spiritual practices via Thunder TV (now Today’s TV). Her team, including lead counsel Richard Asare Baffour, filed an appeal on July 7, arguing the conviction was flawed and the sentence excessive, citing procedural errors.

Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist, remains in custody at Nsawam Prison. She faces a separate trial for allegedly sharing nude images of Prophet Emmanuel Appiah Fomum, with a case management conference set for July 30, 2025. Her lawyers expressed determination to pursue the appeal, challenging the Circuit Court’s ruling on the grounds of unfair trial processes.

The case stems from Agradaa’s TV broadcasts promoting spiritual services, deemed fraudulent by the court. The High Court’s bail denial prolongs her detention, intensifying public debate over her conviction. Supporters claim she’s targeted for her religious shift, while critics argue her actions harmed vulnerable followers, justifying the harsh penalty.

As the appeal process continues, Agradaa’s legal battle highlights tensions around freedom of expression and the regulation of spiritual practices in Ghana. The High Court’s next steps depend on the Circuit Court’s submission of records, with her team vowing to exhaust all legal avenues to secure her release.
