Tourism Minister Fulfills Mahama’s Pledge to Honor Music Icon
Ghana’s government honored highlife legend Agya Koo Nimo with a ceremony in Kumasi on June 26, 2025, fulfilling President John Dramani Mahama’s directive. The event, led by Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Deputy Yussif Jajah, celebrated the 94-year-old’s contributions to palmwine and highlife music, as reported by 3News.
Mahama, speaking at the Black Star Experience launch on May 1, 2025, urged the Ministry to honor Agya Koo Nimo while he is alive. The minister’s visit, joined by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, included a hamper and financial support for musicians performing in his honor, recognizing his role in shaping Ghana’s cultural heritage.
Agya Koo Nimo, born Daniel Amponsah, pioneered palmwine music with his Addadam Agofomma ensemble in the 1950s. His work, blending storytelling and traditional instruments like the apentemma and dondo, earned him awards like the Order of the Volta in 2007 and the Asanteman Award in 1991.

The event united generations, with his wish to perform with Shatta Wale gaining attention.
This tribute underscores Mahama’s push to honor cultural icons promptly. The government plans to support aging creatives further, ensuring their legacies inspire future generations while preserving Ghana’s rich musical history.
