Kweku Ayim, a second year student at Akosombo International School (AIS), has won a gold medal for Ghana at the just ended International Invitational Athletics Competition involving five West African nations.
Ayim, part of the nine-member U-18 Ghana National Athletics Team, claimed victory in the Discus Throw event and shattered the existing competition record.

The tournament, which featured athletes from Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, witnessed Ayim launch a remarkable throw of 39.03 meters, surpassing the previous record of 37.14 meters.
The achievement has drawn praise from across the country, with the visibly elated Headmistress of AIS, Mrs. Sarah Adei describes Ayim’s success as a testament to the school’s emphasis on discipline, hard work, and excellence.
“Kweku’s dedication, perseverance, and training truly reflect the values we instill in our students. He has made both AIS and Ghana proud,” Mrs. Adei stated, adding that the school remains committed to nurturing more talents to compete on global stages.
Recounting his journey, Ayim attributed his rise to the unwavering support of his teachers and coaches at AIS, who first discovered his talent during an inter house competition. His standout performances later at the ISSAG Games hosted at SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College in Tema caught national attention, earning him a place on the Ghana Youth Athletics Team.
“I was overwhelmed and proud of myself. With the help of my school coaches, Messrs Asare, Boateng, and Insaidoo — I went through intense training. I gave it my all, and it turned out to be the farthest discus throw of the tournament,” Ayim said.
He credited his success to the strong support from his coaches and parents, emphasizing that their encouragement boosted his confidence ahead of the tournament.
Ayim’s victory not only brings glory to Ghana but also sets a new benchmark for future young athletes in the region.
