Residents attribute the severe flooding to a poorly designed drainage system, specifically blaming the East Legon Hills road engineers for diverting multiple water channels into a single outlet. After nearly three hours of torrential rain, this caused an overflow, submerging communities like Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon. Lakeside Estate management clarified that flooding was localized near a bridge, exacerbated by a nearby Star Oil filling station obstructing water flow.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Ella Esinam Nongo, confirmed the fatalities and highlighted unregulated construction on waterways as a key factor, noting that blocked drainage systems trapped residents. Emergency teams rescued some in areas like Ashiyie, but the tragedy underscores Accra’s chronic flooding issues, worsened by urban planning deficiencies and haphazard settlements.
National Security’s visit signals the government’s intent to address the crisis, with calls for stricter building regulations and improved drainage infrastructure. The Electricity Company of Ghana, in collaboration with NADMO, is working to restore power safely to affected areas, while residents demand accountability for flawed engineering decisions that amplified the disaster’s impact.
