President Akufo-Addo Reflects on Legacy in Final SONA

On January 3, 2025, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered his final State of the Nation Address, reflecting on his presidency, which began in 2017. Describing his tenure as the “greatest honour” of his life, the outgoing president highlighted his administration’s achievements and laid out his vision for a prosperous and self-reliant Ghana.

Born on March 29, 1944, into a legacy of public service, Akufo-Addo followed in the footsteps of his father, Edward Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s third Chief Justice and ceremonial president. After studying in England and teaching at Accra Academy, he earned a degree in economics at the University of Ghana and later became a leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Akufo-Addo’s presidency began in 2016 after defeating incumbent John Dramani Mahama. His administration introduced significant reforms aimed at economic self-reliance and social development. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises, Akufo-Addo expressed optimism in his final address, believing the foundations laid during his presidency would propel Ghana forward.

As Ghana’s 13th president, Akufo-Addo thanked Ghanaians for trusting him with the nation’s highest office. He emphasized his unwavering hope for Ghana’s future, urging citizens to build on the progress made under his leadership.

While his presidency comes to an end, Akufo-Addo’s legacy will be debated, but his commitment to Ghana’s development and his optimism for its future leave a lasting mark on the nation’s history.
