Statue of immediate former president at Sekondi completely destroyed

The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Takoradi has been completely destroyed. This marks the second act of vandalism against the monument, which was erected to honor his contributions during his presidency.

The first incident occurred on December 16, 2024, when unknown individuals damaged the statue’s leg. Although it was repaired, the recent destruction has left the monument shattered, with its head and parts scattered on the ground. Police CID officers have since visited the scene to investigate and gather evidence.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions. Madam Cecilia Nyame Yeadom condemned the act, describing it as uncivilized and urging authorities to bring the culprits to justice. She highlighted the former president’s contributions to national development, emphasizing the need for respect and caution to prevent further conflicts.

Conversely, some residents, like Mr. Anthony Arhinsa, argued that erecting the statue in the Western Region was misplaced, as they believe the former president made minimal contributions to the area’s development. Others, however, stressed that vandalism should not be condoned regardless of opinions about the statue.

Calls have been made for thorough investigations and greater civic responsibility to prevent such acts in the future, ensuring respect for national symbols and promoting unity.
