President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to officially inaugurate the Electrochem Salt Mine and Processing Plant on August 30, 2023, situated in Ada-Sege within the Greater Accra region. This monumental salt mine and processing facility, touted as the largest in Africa, possesses an impressive production capacity of around 1,000,000 metric tons per annum (equivalent to 250 tons per hour). This output is poised to cater to both local consumption and international export markets. In the foreseeable future, production is projected to witness significant escalation, with a segment of the output channeled to feed a Chlor-Alkali plant, thereby facilitating the manufacture of caustic soda and other chemical derivatives.

Under the management of Electrochem Ghana Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, the plant secured a 15-year mining lease sanctioned by Parliament. Back in October 2020, Parliament granted the company a concession spanning 41,000 acres in Ada Songor. This expansive territory harbors the potential to yield roughly 8 million metric tons of salt products. In the initial operational phase, the Ada Songhor Salt Project yielded approximately 60,000 tonnes of salt over a span of two years. However, owing to a hefty investment of $120 million in the project, the company has substantially elevated its production capacity, currently generating between 200,000 to 300,000 metric tonnes.

President Akufo-Addo is poised to deliver the keynote address during the plant’s commissioning ceremony, alongside esteemed Chiefs and Members of Parliament. The event signifies a significant milestone in Ghana’s industrial landscape, underscoring the nation’s commitment to bolstering its economic sectors.

With ambitions set high, Electrochem seeks to further elevate salt production capacity at the facility, targeting an annual output of one million metric tonnes. This endeavor aims to position Ghana at the forefront of salt production on the African continent.
