Committee Urges Swift Launch of Koforidua Waste Facility

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources urged the government on July 7, 2025, to fast-track the commissioning of the Akwadum Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) in Koforidua. Led by Chairman Hon. John Oti Bless, the committee said the facility could transform waste management and create jobs in the Eastern Region.

During an oversight visit, the committee praised IRECOP’s state-of-the-art setup, capable of processing 1,200 metric tons of waste daily and producing compost for farming. Hon. Oti Bless expressed frustration over delays, urging immediate action to serve the region’s sanitation needs, as noted in the facility’s potential to curb pollution.

Engineer Derrick Kwabena Mintah of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a Jospong Group subsidiary, said the 600-ton capacity plant is nearly complete and could create 500 jobs. The committee highlighted government moves to let MMDAs directly hire waste management providers, boosting efficiency in sanitation services.

MPs like Cletus Seidu Dapilah and Cudjoe Robert Wisdom emphasized IRECOP’s role in preventing dumping and flooding, urging adults to model hygiene for children. New Juaben North’s MCE, Samuel Adongo, pledged to clear debts and support the plant’s launch, aligning with the President’s 24-hour economy vision.
