Ghana’s skeleton and bobsled athlete, Akwasi Frimpong, is gearing up for the 2026 Winter Olympics with a new addition to his team – renowned coach Zach Lund. Frimpong announced the exciting news on his Facebook page, revealing that Lund will be coaching him as he chases qualification for the Winter Olympics.
Lund, a former Olympic competitor and Team USA skeleton coach, brings a wealth of experience to the partnership.
Frimpong expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Lund again, citing the coach’s expertise and guidance as invaluable to his journey. The duo aims to inspire a global audience with their message of resilience, hope, and the power of dreams. With Lund’s support, Frimpong is confident that he can achieve great things and make Ghana proud.
The partnership between Frimpong and Lund is not new. In 2018, Lund played a pivotal role in helping Frimpong qualify for his first Olympics. The duo’s collaboration led to Frimpong becoming the first African athlete to win an elite skeleton race sanctioned by USABS in Park City, Utah. With Lund’s guidance, Frimpong hopes to break more barriers and achieve success on the world stage.
As Frimpong prepares for the 2026 Winter Olympics, he is also grateful for the continued support of Dirk Matschenz, who has coached him for the past three World Cup seasons. Matschenz will provide equipment support to the duo as they work towards their Olympic goals. With Lund’s coaching and Matschenz’s support, Frimpong is poised to make a strong impression at the Winter Olympics and bring glory to Ghana.
