NACSALW Enforces Strict No-Weapon Policy

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSALW) declared the Akwatia Constituency by-elections a “no-go area” for weapons in an August 24, 2025, notice. Executive Secretary Dr. Adam A. Bonah banned firearms, tasers, knives, and any other harmful instruments, with violators facing arrest and prosecution.

Dr. Bonah warned against inflammatory rhetoric and politically motivated violence, urging political leaders to promote peaceful expression. The directive follows a 2024 NACSALW report noting a 10% rise in election-related violence incidents, with 15 cases involving firearms in the Eastern Region.

NACSALW will collaborate with the Ghana Police Service and Electoral Commission to monitor the by-elections, ensuring a violence-free process. The commission’s efforts align with Ghana’s commitment to democratic stability, with 98% of the 2024 elections conducted peacefully, per Electoral Commission data.

The Akwatia by-elections, triggered by the incumbent MP’s resignation, are critical for the region’s 120,000 voters. NACSALW’s strict measures aim to deter the use of over 2,000 unregistered firearms reported in circulation, safeguarding Ghana’s reputation as a secure democracy.

Stakeholders are urged to prioritize peace and respect the rule of law. The commission’s proactive stance, backed by 50 joint security operations in 2025, underscores its resolve to ensure safety before, during, and after the Akwatia polls.
