Update: Missionary Josh Sullivan Rescued Following High-Stakes Police Operation
An American missionary, Josh Sullivan, was rescued after being kidnapped at gunpoint in South Africa. The rescue took place during an intense shootout between South African police and the abductors. The incident occurred last Thursday during a church service in Motherwell, near Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
The elite Hawks unit of the South African Police Service led the successful rescue operation on Tuesday. During the confrontation, police engaged with the suspects, resulting in the death of three unidentified men. Sullivan was found unharmed inside a vehicle and is currently in excellent condition.
Sullivan’s church, the Fellowship Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee, confirmed the news of his rescue. The church’s pastor, Tom Hatley, expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received, emphasizing the importance of continued prayers for Sullivan and his family.

Sullivan’s mother, Tonya Rinker, had earlier confirmed his abduction. She described her son as a devoted pastor and missionary with a passion for serving God and helping others in South Africa. Sullivan, a church-planting missionary, began his work in Gqeberha in 2018 with his family.
