Court of Appeal to decide whether Anas should reveal identity to Kwesi Nyantakyi
The Court of Appeal will rule on January 30, 2025, whether investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas must disclose his identity to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi before testifying in court. The decision follows Nyantakyi’s request, which argues that Anas’ credibility should be scrutinized in the ongoing corruption trial.
Nyantakyi is facing fraud and corruption charges linked to Anas’ 2018 #Number 12 exposé, which unveiled systemic corruption in Ghanaian football. The exposé caught Nyantakyi accepting bribes, leading to his resignation as GFA president and a lifetime ban from football by FIFA. Abdulai Alhassan, former Northern Regional GFA chairman and a co-accused, is also facing conspiracy charges. Both have pleaded not guilty.
The Accra High Court trial remains stalled pending the Court of Appeal’s decision. Justice Marie-Louise Simmons has stated that proceeding with the trial would be inappropriate while the appellate court deliberates on this critical issue.
The outcome of the ruling will determine if Anas, known for his masked appearances to protect his identity, must reveal his face in court. This decision is expected to shape the trajectory of one of Ghana’s most high-profile corruption trials.
The case underscores the ongoing tension between protecting whistleblower anonymity and ensuring fair legal processes in corruption investigations, making the Court of Appeal’s ruling a pivotal moment for justice and accountability.
